11-year-old Ashleen Khela, hailing from Nawanshahr’s Sajawalpur village, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the title of Australia’s youngest female author. Ashleen's debut book, titled '17 Stories,' not only showcases her literary prowess but also stands out for its captivating narratives that have garnered attention and acclaim. Beyond literary success, the book is leaving an indelible mark through its philanthropic endeavors. Sales of '17 Stories' contribute to noteworthy causes, including the Cancer Council of Australia and the Starlight Children Foundation. Ashleen's compassionate initiative extends to her roots, as proceeds from the book also go towards aiding underprivileged children in India. This multi-faceted impact reflects a blend of talent, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive difference. Her story serves as an inspiration not only for aspiring young authors but also for those seeking to use their talents to make meaningful contributions to society.

What truly distinguishes Ashleen is her exceptional determination and independence in bringing '17 Stories' to fruition. Opting to forego financial support from her parents, she embarked on a unique fundraising journey, collecting recyclables like plastic and glass bottles, as well as soft drink cans. Breaking open her piggy bank, Ashleen utilized the proceeds to independently fund the publication of her book. '17 Stories' spans a rich tapestry of genres, including fantasy, magic, myth, and mystery. Ashleen's creativity knows no bounds as she weaves narratives  that draw inspiration from her own life experiences, infusing the fiction with a touch of reality and relatability.

Beyond the enchanting tales, Ashleen ensures that each story concludes with uplifting morals. This thoughtful touch aims to impart valuable life lessons to young readers, making '17 Stories' not just a captivating read but also a source of inspiration. Ashleen's imaginative journey takes readers from her Sydney backyard during the Covid lockdown to enchanting realms encompassing caves, mountains, and the rural landscapes of Punjab. Her storytelling prowess invites readers to explore diverse landscapes and cultures, fostering a sense of global connection. Through her narratives, Ashleen delves into themes of social injustice and deprivation. She sheds light on the challenges faced by underprivileged children living in roadside slum hovels in India, urging readers to reflect on these issues and inspiring a sense of empathy and social responsibility.

When asked about her motivation for penning '17 Stories', Ashleen pointed to her trips to India. These experiences exposed her to the stark social disparities, inspiring her to use storytelling as a medium to shed light on these issues. As the daughter of Australia-based NRI Amarjit Khela, recognized for his contributions to Sajawalpur's development, Ashleen has a vision that extends beyond borders. Her goal is to raise awareness in western countries about the challenges faced by underprivileged children in developing nations and, concurrently, generate funds to support their needs. Through '17 Stories,' she seeks to bridge gaps, fostering understanding and empathy on a global scale.
